“Van Gogh: Poets & Lovers” at National Gallery

The National Gallery in London recently hosted the exclusive private opening of its highly anticipated exhibition, “Van Gogh: Poets & Lovers,” an extraordinary showcase that brings together some of the most beloved works by Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh. This once-in-a-century exhibit was made even more special as it coincided with the National Gallery’s 200th anniversary, celebrating its enduring legacy as one of the world’s most renowned art institutions. Rocket was delighted to be chosen to provide the catering for this prestigious opening, which took place in the heart of the city at one of its most iconic cultural landmarks.

The Setup

Gallery directors and board members, VIP guests and esteemed people in the art world came together to celebrate this special night and were welcomed with a stunning drinks bar that featured lush floral arrangements by London florists Pinstripes & Peonies. The florals were a nod to the vivid colours and themes of Van Gogh’s masterpieces as seen in the exhibit, reflecting the artist’s journey through his years in Arles and Saint-Rémy. The atmosphere was one of elegance and sophistication, setting the perfect tone for an evening dedicated to both fine art and food.

Canapé Reception

The array of canapés was as exquisite as the artwork on display, with morsels such as Rocket’s award-winning Smoked Trout Royale along with seasonal picks like the Coronation Chicken Cannelloni and a decadent Duck Parfait. Guests sipped on Nyetimber’s finest English sparkling wine, a fitting accompaniment to the thoughtfully selected canapés.

After a warm welcome speech by one of the National Gallery’s directors, attendees were invited to view some of Van Gogh’s most iconic paintings up close, including masterpieces such as “Starry Night over the Rhône” (1888, Musée d’Orsay), “The Yellow House” (1888, Van Gogh Museum), the National Gallery’s own “Sunflowers” (1888), and “Van Gogh’s Chair” (1889). The exhibit presents a rare opportunity to see these celebrated works side by side, a feast for the eyes of any art lover.

Dinner

As the evening progressed, guests were seated for a three-course dinner in the iconic Gallery 32, steeped in decades of art history. Rocket’s culinary team crafted a menu designed to reflect the brilliance of the exhibition itself as well as the 200-year heritage of the gallery. The first course featured London Cure Smoked Salmon by H. Forman & Son, a local family-run business known for their exceptional smoked Scottish salmon. This was followed by a succulent roast rump of Herdwick Lamb, a breed of sheep native to the Lake District in North West England. To end the meal on a sweet note, guests were treated to a beautifully plated pink lady apple tart accompanied by a tart yet refreshing blackberry sorbet, highlighting a sophisticated balance of flavours.

The evening was a true celebration of art, heritage, and gastronomy, setting the tone for the unfolding of another new season of exhibition openings and events around the capital — an unforgettable experience for everyone present that night.

For those eager to experience Van Gogh’s masterpieces in person, “Van Gogh: Poets & Lovers” is now open to the public until 19 January 2025 at the National Gallery. It promises to be a must-see exhibition for art enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.
